New Geology Tour Explores the Science Inside Lookout Mountain
Digging Deeper: Discover the New Geology Tour at Ruby Falls
Ruby Falls has always been a place of wonder — an awe-inspiring underground waterfall tucked deep inside Lookout Mountain. Now, visitors can take their sense of discovery even further with a brand-new Geology Tour designed for curious minds who want to explore not just the beauty of Ruby Falls Cave, but the science behind it.
This specialty tour offers an in-depth look at the forces that shaped Ruby Falls Cave over millions of years. From fossils hidden in the limestone to the intricate water etched stone, and ancient geological formations, every step reveals the powerful geological processes creating this natural wonder.
A Tour Rooted in Science
Developed in collaboration with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Geology Department (UTC), the Geology Tour blends scientific insight with the excitement of exploration. Dr. Amy Brock-Hon, Professor of Geology and Associate Department Head at UTC was instrumental in finalizing information presented in the tour to highlight the most fascinating scientific aspects of the cave.
“Lookout Mountain’s biodiversity and the accessibility of Ruby Falls Cave create a rare opportunity to explore geology in a way that’s both engaging and unforgettable,” says Hollie Baranick, Tours & Guest Experience Manager at Ruby Falls.
What to Expect on the Geology Tour
Led by a senior-level Ruby Falls guide, this small-group experience takes participants along the cavern trail to the spectacular underground waterfall. Along the way, guests will:
Look closely at fossils embedded in limestone walls.
Learn how water dissolves rock over time to form chambers and passageways.
Learn how chemical reactions create delicate formations in stunning shapes, sizes, and colors.
Spend extra time at the breathtaking underground waterfall, admiring the towering limestone dome carved by water over thousands of years.
For anyone who’s ever wondered how caves are created — or just loves uncovering the mysteries of nature — this tour is the perfect way to dig deeper.
Meeting Visitor Curiosity
Ruby Falls created the Geology Tour in response to guest feedback. “Visitors are requesting opportunities to dive deeper into the natural science of the cave,” says Abe McCauley, Director of Operations at Ruby Falls. “This tour gives them the chance to connect closely with both the beauty and the natural science inside Lookout Mountain — and to understand why preserving delicate cave ecosystems is so important.”
Plan Your Visit
Because of its interactive nature, group sizes are limited, so it’s recommended to purchase tickets several days in advance. The Geology Tour is open to guests ages 5 and older.
Whether you’re a lifelong science lover or just curious about what lies beneath the surface, the new Geology Tour at Ruby Falls is a chance to experience one of Tennessee’s most iconic landmarks in a whole new way.
